Imad Alarnab was a successful businessman with a young, happy family when the Syrian conflict broke out in 2011. He ran two restaurants, a café and several juice bars in Damascus, the country’s capital. “Life was fantastic,” he recalls. “My restaurants were successful, it was a peaceful, warm life.” His customers included tourists on religious pilgrimages and the local middle class. As the uprising descended into civil war, trade declined to the point where the businesses became untenable. “You need a stable environment for a middle-class customer.
