Imad Alarnab was a successful businessman with a young, happy family when the Syrian conflict broke out in 2011. He ran two restaurants, a café and several juice bars in Damascus, the country’s capital. “Life was fantastic,” he recalls. “My restaurants were successful, it was a peaceful, warm life.” His customers included tourists on religious pilgrimages and the local middle class.
